Las hermanas Venus y Serena Williams tendr\u00e1n el lunes un test de popularidad en el Abierto de tenis de Estados Unidos, cuando disputen la final femenina de dobles en busca de su d\u00e9cimo t\u00edtulo de Gran Slam en esta modalidad. Las canchas de cemento de Flushing Meadows, escenario de sus grandes triunfos individuales y de dobles, se le han vuelto un tanto adversas a las Williams, y todo a causa de la belga Kim Clijsters, una ‘advenediza’ que ha regresado al circuito WTA por la puerta grande, para eliminar a las consentidas de Nueva York en este torneo, y sellar pasaje a la final de este domingo.<\/p>\n

Clijsters, campeona del US Open 2005, estuvo dos a\u00f1os ausente de las canchas por lesiones y maternidad, pero ha regresado con nuevos br\u00edos, y con mucha sangre fr\u00eda y buen tenis baj\u00f3 del torneo a varias favoritas, incluidas las Williams. La valona elimin\u00f3 primero a Venus Williams, tercera favorita, en octavos de final por 6-0, 0-6, 6-4, y en semifinales dej\u00f3 fuera a la campeona vigente, Serena Williams (N.2) por 6-4, 7-5, en un partido que termin\u00f3 de forma controvertida.<\/p>\n

S\u00f3lo los grandes ‘monstruos’ como Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi y John McEnroe han tenido gradas incondicionales en este campo, y Serena lo comprob\u00f3 la noche del s\u00e1bado, cuando sali\u00f3 abucheada del estadio Arthur Asher tras perder su compromiso contra Clijsters en semifinales. Todo se origin\u00f3 en la llamada que una jueza de l\u00ednea realiz\u00f3 a Serena por tocar la l\u00ednea de saque con su pie izquierdo, algo que la norteamericana neg\u00f3 de forma descompuesta, lo que le cost\u00f3 ser sancionada con un punto, que result\u00f3 el decisivo del partido a favor de Clisjters.<\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan versiones de varios medios de prensa estadounidense, Serena amenaz\u00f3 a la \u00e1rbitro con hacerle \u00abtragar la pelota\u00bb. \u00abSi yo pudiera, tomar\u00eda esta pelota, te la hundir\u00eda en la garganta y te matar\u00eda\u00bb, habr\u00eda dicho Serena, palabras que por supuesto neg\u00f3 en la rueda de prensa posterior al partido.
