Es as\u00ed que a trav\u00e9s de la rama filantr\u00f3pica de Google Inc., Google.org, la gigante de internet destin\u00f3 el a\u00f1o pasado 45 millones de d\u00f3lares a la investigaci\u00f3n en energ\u00eda solar t\u00e9rmica y e\u00f3lica, adem\u00e1s sistemas geot\u00e9rmicos mejorados (EGS). E invirti\u00f3 en \u2019startups\u2019 como eSolar o BrightSolar, y en los \u00faltimos meses se lanz\u00f3 al campo de la eficiencia energ\u00e9tica con el PowerMeter, un software que permite controlar desde un ordenador port\u00e1til (y en el futuro, desde un tel\u00e9fono m\u00f3vil) el consumo energ\u00e9tico en los hogares en tiempo real, pero la reconversi\u00f3n empez\u00f3 desde dentro: la empresa ahorr\u00f3 50% de energ\u00eda en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00abExiste una gran posibilidad de llegar a ese punto de inflexi\u00f3n en cinco a\u00f1os\u00bb, anticipa Bill Weihl, el cerebro verde de Google. \u00abPuede que tardemos algo m\u00e1s, pero estamos decididos a apostar por ideas innovadoras en todo el abanico de las renovables\u00bb.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/09\/11\/091109\/google.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"GOOGLE APUESTA POR INVESTIGACI\u00d3N EN ENERG\u00cdAS RENOVABLES\" title=\"GOOGLE APUESTA POR INVESTIGACI\u00d3N EN ENERG\u00cdAS RENOVABLES\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">La llegada a Mountain Valley de Bill Weihl, ex profesor del Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachussetts, se tradujo en el redise\u00f1o del centro de datos (con un ahorro del 50% de la energ\u00eda) y en la instalaci\u00f3n de uno de los mayores tejados solares de EEUU, con placas fotovoltaicas capaces de generar 1,6 megavatios.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">El propio Larry Page, cofundador de Google, entr\u00f3 en la din\u00e1mica y anunci\u00f3 su intenci\u00f3n de \u00abaplicar la misma creatividad e imaginaci\u00f3n al reto de generar energ\u00eda renovable a gran escala\u00bb. El reto, anunci\u00f3, es llegar a producir un Gigavatio de energ\u00eda limpia (suficiente para abastecer San Francisco) a un precio m\u00e1s barato que el carb\u00f3n.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">La funci\u00f3n de Weihl consiste ahora en acelerar esa b\u00fasqueda, con la mirada puesta en la energ\u00eda termosolar. Su objetivo es reducir un 50% o incluso un 75% el coste de los heliostatos (o espejos) usados para llevar a ebullici\u00f3n el agua y generar electricidad con vapor.
